Challenge

Thursday Island faces acute housing shortages, with many families living in overcrowded conditions and key workers struggling to find accommodation. Building on the island is notoriously difficult due to its remote location, minimal infrastructure, limited workforce and exposure to extreme weather.

Solution

Oly Homes prefabricated eight modular homes, including two fully accessible dwellings. The homes were designed with cyclone-resistant materials and passive cooling principles to suit the tropical climate. Innovative logistics, including specialised plastic wrapping to protect modules during sea transport, enabled safe delivery and installation. Landscaping, fencing, parking, and driveways were completed to ensure a move-in-ready addition to the community.
